Why is it that when mom falls sick, more often than not, she has to keep going? Life doesn’t seem to stop just because mom caught a cold. Does that sound familiar? It does over here. Kids, carpool, sports, dinner; they all must go on even if this mom’s nose is running and all she wants to do is crawl into bed.
Since there’s really no Day Off (or anyone to call in a Sick Day, for that matter), this busy mom doesn’t have the time to come down with a cold! Really, it’s such a nuisance to wake up with a sore throat or a case of the sneezes, don’t you think?
So that’s why, as soon as the weather starts to change, I keep those vital cold and flu products on hand. Sort of like my own homemade cold and flu wellness kit so that this mom – and her crazy active family – can all stay healthy this busy time of year!
Here’s how to make your own DIY cold and flu kit + a 10-minute DIY hot pad…

how to make winter wellness kits to beat a cold
There’s nothing quite as annoying to a mom’s life than being sick. And come wintertime, the odds of coming down with a cold, or worse the flu, seem to only skyrocket. And this is why this mom tries to keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet as soon as those chilly winds start to blow!
Start with a mug-full of winter wellness…
Even though coffee is my thing, when I’m sick I’ll take a cup of hot tea anytime. However, I can now use my single-serve coffee maker to treat the symptoms of the cold and flu with an overstuffed large mug of Theraflu Power Pods Daytime Severe Cold. Who knew?! I can now get temporary relief of those cold-induced and flu-induced headaches, congestion and body aches, a cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, and minor sore throat pain with Theraflu Power Pods. It also temporarily reduces fever. (Available in both Daytime and Nighttime formulations.)
Making a “get better” kit? Add a bottle of the NEW! Robitussin® Maximum Strength Honey Cough & Chest Congestion DM to provide hours of coughing relief. This new honey flavor cough relief is gluten free with no artificial colors and made with true source certified honey.
how to make a 10-minute DIY hot pad
When you succumb to those cold and flu body aches, there’s nothing quite like a little heat!
Enjoy your hot mug of tea while soothing those cold-induced aches and pains with a 10-minute DIY hot (or cold) pad… It’s also a great way to make a dent in your fabric stash!
Start by cutting two strips of fabric the same size. I used my pinking sheers so I didn’t have to worry about fraying seams. Pin the wrong sides together, only THREE sides though.
Sew THREE of the sides together, leaving the fourth end open.
Pour the rice in. Pin and sew close.
Heat for a few seconds for soothing relief. (Or freeze, depending on your needs.)
keep the family healthy with DIY cold and flu care kits
Whether it’s you, one of your kiddos or a sick neighbor, keep everyone around you as healthy as possible with a well-stocked DIY cold and flu care kits.
In addition to Theraflu Power Pods and Robitussin cough relief, I try to have Abreva® Pump Cold Sore and Fever Blister Treatment for illness-induced cold sore relief. Abreva can heal your cold sore in 2 1/2 days*.
I also stock up on Breathe® Right Extra Clear Nasal Strips. Whether it’s you or your spouse, get relief from nighttime snoring from nasal congestion. These little adhesive strips are drug-free and safe to use with any sleep medication.
I wipe down my kitchen counters, my kid’s lunchboxes and when I think of it, door knobs and light switches with Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes. They can be used on any hard, non-porous surface. I try to do this regularly so I can wipe away 99.9% of the most common allergens**
Mom or not, no one really has the time to come down with a cold, or worse, the flu. There’s too much life to be live!
In addition to keeping tissues in my car, in my purse and wherever runny noses show up, keep your medicine cabinet well-stocked this wintertime with cold essentials like Theraflu Power Pods, Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes, Abreva, Breathe Right, and Robitussin cough relief.
Or, send “get better soon” with a DIY winter wellness care package for an ill friend and neighbor.
Stay healthy, friends!

Very cute idea, and it’s great and useful as a holiday gift this time of year. Thanks for sharing.
I got the flu vaccine this year, so I’m crossing my fingers I won’t need this. but it’s a very useful idea.
