INSIDE: How to make patriotic red, white and blue stars using paper drinking straws. Easy, cheap, fun 4th of July decorations.
How do you celebrate the summertime Red, White and Blue festivities? When my husband and I were dating, in an attempt, I’m guessing, to win me over, he hosted a CanAm party. “Can” for Canada Day on July 1st (where I grew up) and “Am” for Independance Day on July 4th.
Fast forward 10+ years later, we decide to resurrect our CanAm celebration. Fortunately, both countries share 2 of 3 same colors, which helps on the decorating front. So when I came across a variety of paper straws, in the iconic red, white and blue colors, I snagged them. Not for drinks but for crafting, of course!
Here’s how to use paper straws, pom poms and glue to make some patriotic paper stars…

How to Make Fun July 4th Patriotic Decor Stars
Paper straws are more than just for dressing up a cocktail. Although a straw in any drink always helps!
As much as you can plan for a successful party, life happens. In our case, it was wildlife. As the kids were settled on the grass for an outdoor movie so the adults could chit chat in peace, one curious three year old, using words only her parents could understand, calmly pointed out a snake. Nothing like a reptile for guests to scatter, desserts to fly and a party to come to a slithering end! Not quite the CanAm”fireworks” we had planned.
Supplies:
– Patriotic paper straws
– Bamboo BBQ skewers
– Patriotic scrapbook stickers
– Pompoms
– Tape
– Craft glue
How to Make Fun Patriotic Stars from Paper Drinking Straws
Cut two paper straws in half. You need three halves + one full straw to make a paper star.
Find the center of the paper straw half. Flatten out the middle slightly.
Add a drop of glue to the center of a flattened straw. Place a second straw half on top to create an X.
Place a third straw half on top horizontally. Finally, place a full straw on top vertically.
Add a patriotic-colored pompom on top of the star. Or, add a patriotic scrapbook pinwheel sticker.
Once the glue has set, insert a bamboo BBQ skewer through the full paper straw.
Add a small piece of tape to the very end of the skewer to hold the straw in place.

Those are so cute! Our biggest problem is keeping the kids away from the paper straws before I get the chance to craft with them. Thanks so much for sharing at the #happynowlinkup!
This is really cute, and looks easy to make too. I’m thinking that with different color schemes those stars would make a great birthday party decor. Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!
Clever! These could be adapted pattern wise for UK flag colours too couldn’t they? Ready for the Royal Wedding coming up next weekend. We’re red, white and blue too just less stars!

It will make for a fun activity with the kids.
