DIY Tips & Ideas
Good DIY is mostly planning. Measure twice, test the paint on the back, lay everything out before you glue it. These tips come from making the projects on this site, and from fixing the things that went wrong along the way.
If you're new to DIY, start with paint and glue projects before you buy power tools. A pallet wall or a stenciled ceiling teaches patience, and a closet makeover teaches you to edit.
Each tutorial on this site ends with one thrifty tip. These are the ones that apply to almost every project.
Where to start: read the tips list, then pick the project that matches your free time. The plastic pot makeover takes an afternoon, the closet a weekend, the pallet wall or the ceiling a full weekend. Each tutorial lists the time and skill level at the top, so you can plan before you shop.
The projects
How to Decorate a Wood Pallet Wall
Build a pallet accent wall, then dress it with three things and some empty space.
How to Stencil a Pattern on a Ceiling
One stencil and a sample pot turn a plain ceiling into a fifth wall.
Master Closet Makeover on a Budget
Matching hangers, a second rod and labeled bins do most of the work.
How to Age Plastic Terra Cotta Flower Pots
Dry-brushed paint gives cheap plastic pots the chalky look of old clay.
Good to know
- Test paint and finishes on a hidden spot first.
- Thin coats of paint beat one thick coat: fewer drips, faster drying.
- Read the cure time on glue and paint; dry to the touch isn't the same as ready to use.
- Wear a mask when sanding and a respirator for spray paint indoors.
- Keep a small kit ready: tape measure, pencil, painter's tape, sandpaper and a utility knife.
- Take a photo before you start. It helps you put things back and shows how far you've come.
