Repurposed
Repurposing is the most thrifty kind of DIY: the supplies are already in the recycling bin, the kitchen drawer or the thrift store. A tin can becomes a vase, a shower caddy becomes a planter, and a stack of coffee filters becomes a pumpkin.
Before you start, clean everything well and check for sharp edges, rust and cracks. Then look at the shape, not the label.
Where to start: the coffee filter pumpkin and the photo vases need nothing you don't already have in the kitchen. The planters and the patio table take a little more, but most of it still comes from the garage or a thrift store.

Good to know
- Tin cans: file the inside rim smooth before kids handle them.
- Spray primer made for the material (metal, glass or plastic) keeps paint from peeling.
- Keep a box for promising junk: jars, cans, frames. Projects come easier when the supplies are on hand.
