A geodesic dome greenhouse is a strong, four-season structure, but it's expensive. The leading kit, the Growing Spaces 15 ft Growing Dome, costs $11,950 for 175 sq ft before you pour a foundation. That's well over ten times the cost per square foot of a backyard hoop house. Buy a dome if you garden year-round in a harsh climate and want a permanent showpiece. For a portable dome with published wind ratings, Pacific Domes sells film-covered domes by quote. If you're on a budget, a hoop house or a polycarbonate kit grows the same crops for far less.

Domes get a lot of attention on Pinterest and Instructables, but most of what ranks for "dome greenhouse" is a DIY photo with no costs or performance data. This page puts the real numbers side by side. All prices and ratings come from the manufacturers' own sites and retailer listings. Where a number is a seller's claim, we say so. We have not built or grown in these domes ourselves.
Is a geodesic dome greenhouse worth it?
| Dome advantage | What it means in practice | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Strength from triangles | Wind and snow loads spread across the whole frame. Pacific Domes rates its 16 ft dome for 150 mph with no snow. | Only true of an engineered kit, properly anchored. Bubble domes are rated far lower. |
| Lots of volume for its surface area | A sphere encloses the most space for the least surface, so there's less glazing to lose heat through. | The volume is high in the middle. Floor space near the walls is low and awkward. |
| Light from every angle | Low winter sun enters through panels that face it all day. | Panels facing north lose heat without adding much light. Some builders insulate them. |
| Four-season design | Growing Spaces kits include 16 mm multi-wall polycarbonate, a foundation wall, solar vents and fans, and a water tank for thermal mass. | You pay for all of it up front, and the foundation is a separate project. |
| Longevity | Growing Spaces' own comparison claims "20-30 years" against 3-5 years for a hoop house. | That is the seller's rating. It's also comparing a hoop house's film, which is cheap to replace, with the whole dome. |
Our take: a dome is a premium, long-term greenhouse for people who will use it year-round in a cold or high-altitude climate. If you mainly want spring starts and summer tomatoes, spend the money on a bigger conventional greenhouse and a heater instead.

Pacific Domes 16' Greenhouse Dome
Pacific Domes makes a 2-frequency dome from 95 galvanized steel struts with a greenhouse vinyl cover. Two people can put it up in about two hours, according to the maker, and it comes with anchoring hardware for any surface. It has the strongest published ratings here: 150 mph with no snow, and 20 lb of snow at 130 mph. The vinyl cover insulates less than multi-wall polycarbonate, though, and pricing is quote-only.
Why it stands out
- Published wind and snow ratings
- Fast to erect, and can be moved
- Round door, 2 roll-up vents and a solar fan included
Watch out for
- Vinyl cover, not rigid glazing
- No public price; you must request a quote

Garden Igloo 12' Dome
Search "dome greenhouse" on Amazon and you'll find bubble domes like this one: a 12 ft PVC- or aluminum-framed igloo with a PVC cover. It's fine as a winter patio room or a cover for potted plants. But it's rated for winds up to only 31 mph, the listing is marked obsolete, and owners give it 3.4/5. Don't confuse it with an engineered dome.
Why it stands out
- Fraction of a kit dome's cost
- Walk-in, with a zippered entrance
Watch out for
- 31 mph wind rating; must use the anchor kit
- Listing marked obsolete; mixed ratings

What does a dome greenhouse really cost?
Here are Growing Spaces' published kit prices: 15 ft $11,950, 18 ft $15,950. The 22, 26, 33 and 42 ft domes climb to more than fifty thousand dollars. Then add:
- Foundation: the kit's 24 in foundation wall sits on a base you build, and the bulky foundation materials are owner-supplied. See our greenhouse foundation guide for the options.
- Delivery: crates weigh roughly 1,275-2,180 lb, so you need truck access and help or equipment to unload.
- Assembly time: it's a DIY kit with many parts. Budget several weekends, or pay a builder.
- Permits: a permanent structure on a foundation over your town's size limit almost always needs one.
For comparison, a 10x12 backyard hoop house costs $650 for 120 sq ft. Per square foot, the dome costs well over ten times as much. What you get for the difference is rigid multi-wall glazing, built-in thermal mass and a structure designed for every season. Our greenhouse cost guide puts all greenhouse types on one chart.
Dome vs hoop house vs polycarbonate greenhouse
| Geodesic dome (kit) | Hoop house | Polycarbonate kit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover | 16 mm multi-wall polycarbonate or vinyl | 6 mil film, about 4 years | 4-10 mm twin-wall panels |
| Winter growing | Designed for it | Unheated season extension; can be heated | Good with a heater |
| Snow | Strong frame; maker ratings vary | Needs gothic shape, bracing, sweeping | Ratings published per model |
| Usable floor | Circular; low edges | Rectangular; low edges on round bows | Rectangular; straight walls |
| Benches and shelving | Harder to fit standard benches | Easy down the middle | Easy |
| Relative cost per sq ft | Highest | Lowest | Middle |
Shape matters more than people expect. Standard rectangular benches and shelving waste space against a curved wall, and the edges of a dome are too low to stand in. Growers who love their domes usually plant in a ring of beds around the edge, with the water tank and taller crops in the center. For straight-walled alternatives, see polycarbonate greenhouse kits and walk-in greenhouse kits.
Building a DIY geodesic dome greenhouse
DIY domes are the most popular dome content online, and for good reason: a small film-covered dome can cost a fraction of a kit. What to know before you start:
- Pick a frequency "2V" and "3V" describe how many triangles make up the sphere. Higher frequency means a rounder dome, but more struts and hubs to make. Most backyard builds are 2V or 3V.
- Choose strut material Wood is easy to cut and screw. EMT conduit is stronger and can be flattened and drilled at the ends. PVC is cheapest, but it's flexible and degrades in sunlight.
- Get the lengths right Use an online dome calculator for strut lengths and hub angles. A few millimeters of error repeated across dozens of struts adds up.
- Anchor it A dome is light and aerodynamic, but it still lifts in wind. Fix the base ring to stakes, a timber frame or a foundation.
- Plan the cover Covering many triangles is the hardest part. Film wrapped over the frame is quick but wrinkles. Cut polycarbonate triangles last longer, but every seam needs sealing.
- Ventilate A dome traps heat at the top. Build in a high vent and a low vent, or add a solar fan.
For straight-walled DIY builds that go faster, see our DIY greenhouse guide.
Running a dome through winter
Growing Spaces designs its domes around passive solar heating: multi-wall glazing, a water tank for thermal mass, and solar-powered vents. Even so, dome owners in cold climates often keep a backup heater for the coldest nights. Whatever you use, follow the safety basics in our winter greenhouse guide: use heaters made for greenhouse or outdoor use, plug electrics into a GFCI-protected outlet, and never run an unvented fuel heater in a closed greenhouse.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a bubble dome as a greenhouse A 31 mph wind rating and a thin PVC cover won't survive a real winter.
- Underestimating the foundation Kit domes sit on a foundation wall you build. It's a real construction job.
- Filling it with rectangular benches Plan curved or wedge-shaped beds around the edge.
- Skipping ventilation Domes overheat at the crown on sunny days, even in winter.
- Not checking delivery access A 2,000 lb crate needs a driveway and a plan.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a geodesic dome greenhouse cost?
Kit prices start around twelve thousand dollars for Growing Spaces' 15 ft Growing Dome and run past fifty thousand for its 42 ft model, before foundation materials and labor. Pacific Domes sells film-covered domes by quote. Cheap bubble domes exist, but they are patio covers, not greenhouses.
Are dome greenhouses better than regular greenhouses?
For year-round growing in a cold, windy or snowy climate, a well-built dome has real advantages: lots of interior volume for its surface area, strength from its triangulated frame, and room for a water tank as thermal mass. For most gardeners, though, a hoop house or polycarbonate kit grows the same crops for a fraction of the price.
Can a geodesic dome greenhouse handle snow?
The frame shape spreads load well. Pacific Domes rates its 16 ft greenhouse dome for 20 lb of snow at 130 mph wind, and Growing Spaces sells its domes as four-season structures. A dome's lower panels are shallow-sloped, so snow can still sit near the top; check the maker's rating for your area.
Can I build my own geodesic dome greenhouse?
Yes. DIY domes from wood, EMT conduit or PVC struts with film covers are popular projects. The hard parts are cutting dozens of struts accurately, joining them at hubs, and sealing a cover over many angles. Expect far more time than a hoop house of the same floor area.
Why is there a pond in a dome greenhouse?
Growing Spaces kits include an above-ground water tank as thermal mass. Water absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, which evens out temperature swings in an unheated or lightly heated greenhouse.
