For a permanent walk-in greenhouse, the Palram-Canopia Americana 12x12 is the best large pick: 144 sq ft, 8.6 ft peak, double doors and published 56 mph / 15.4 lb/sq ft ratings. For a heavy-duty build in snow country, choose the Riverstone MONT (65 mph / 24 lb/sq ft). On a budget, a Bootstrap Farmer 10x12 hoop house ($650) gives you a large greenhouse you can grow in the ground. A $50-$130 film walk-in is fine for a season of seedlings, but don't expect it to last.

"Walk in greenhouse" covers two very different products. One is a steel-tube frame with a plastic cover and wire shelves, sold on Amazon for less than a bag of potting soil costs per shelf. The other is a hard-sided aluminum and polycarbonate building you can stand, work and even sit in. Both are useful, but for different jobs. This guide covers both, with the specs that actually matter for a walk-in: headroom, door size, floor area and whether it will still be standing after the first storm. Picks are research-based (spec sheets, retailer listings and owner reports), not hands-on tests.
Film walk-in vs hard-sided walk-in: which do you need?
| Film walk-in (PE/PVC) | Hoop house (6 mil film) | Hard-sided (polycarbonate) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical price | $40-$140 | $500-$1,500 for backyard sizes | About $450 for bargain 6x8s to $10,000+ |
| Cover life | Often 1-2 seasons by owner reports; 6-month to 1-year warranties | About 4 years (film rating) | 20-25 years for bi-wall polycarbonate (Univ. of Arkansas) |
| Wind | Self-declared at best (Greengro claims 45 mph) | Depends on anchoring; ground stakes included | Published ratings, 50-65 mph in this guide |
| Snow | None | Brush off; gothic shapes shed better | 15-24 lb/sq ft published |
| Best for | Seedlings, overwintering pots, renters | Growing in the ground on a budget | A permanent greenhouse you'll use for years |
Rule of thumb: if you want it standing next winter, buy hard-sided or a proper hoop house. If you need a warm shelf for spring and will fold it away in June, a film walk-in does the job.
Headroom and door size: the walk-in specs that matter
"Walk-in" on a box only means an adult can get inside. Check peak height, sidewall height and door opening against your own height and your wheelbarrow.
| Kit | Peak height | Door opening | Floor area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palram Mythos 6x10 | 6.8 ft | 1'10" x 5'4" (duck to enter) | About 61 sq ft |
| Palram Balance 8-ft series | 7.5 ft | 45.1" x 75.8" double doors | 64-160 sq ft |
| Palram Snap & Grow 8x12 | 8.5 ft | 3'9" x 6'5" double doors | About 100 sq ft |
| Riverstone MONT 8x12 | 7.5 ft (4'10" sidewalls) | 6 ft x 4 ft double doors | About 105 sq ft |
| Palram Americana 12x12 | 8.6 ft | High double swing doors | 144 sq ft |
| Exaco RIGA XL 6 | 9.1 ft | Two 37.5" x 74" dutch doors | About 267 sq ft |
| Bootstrap Farmer Hobby 10x12 | 7.9 ft | Not included (door kits extra) | 120 sq ft |
Two gotchas: the 6-ft Palram family has a door opening just 5'4" tall, and low sidewalls (MONT's 4'10") mean you can only stand upright near the center. If you're tall, put the benches along the low walls and keep the aisle under the ridge.
The best walk-in greenhouse kits
Palram Americana 12x12
A barn-style 12x12 with an 8.6 ft peak, twin-wall roof and clear SnapGlas walls, two roof vents and high double doors with a low threshold. It's big enough for benches on three sides plus a chair. The anchoring kit is included, and the 56 mph / 15.4 lb/sq ft ratings assume you use it. Eartheasy sells the greenhouse on its own. Costco bundles it with an accessory pack, which explains the price spread.

Palram Mythos 6x10
The smallest greenhouse we'd call a genuine walk-in: 4 mm twin-wall all round, a 6.8 ft peak, and room for a bench run plus an aisle. If you can live with a narrow door, it's the cheapest way into a permanent hard-sided walk-in sold through Eartheasy. The 6x8 sits one size down; our 6x8 greenhouse guide covers it.
Why it stands out
- Twin-wall all round for heat retention
- Published 56 mph / 15.4 lb/sq ft ratings
- Extends to 6x14 on the same frame
Watch out for
- 1'10" x 5'4" door opening: you duck, and a wheelbarrow won't fit

Greengro 57x57 Walk-In
The classic 4.75 ft square steel-and-film walk-in with 8 shelves, but with a grid-reinforced PE cover that's heavier than the cheapest VEVOR and Pure Garden versions. Greengro claims 45 mph wind resistance. That's the maker's own figure, not a test. If you need more shelf space, VEVOR's 14-shelf version ($67) is roomier, but VEVOR itself says to put it somewhere sheltered.
Why it stands out
- Reinforced cover, sturdier than bargain-bin walk-ins
- 8 shelves for trays and overwintering pots
- 4.1/5 on 1,078 Amazon ratings
Watch out for
- Owners report unstable shelves and zippers wearing out
- No snow capacity: take it down or brush it off

How to choose a large or heavy-duty greenhouse kit
Size and permits
Measure your space, then think about how you'll use it. Two benches plus a 2-ft aisle needs at least 6 ft of width, and 8 ft feels far less cramped. Many towns let you build accessory structures up to roughly 120 sq ft without a permit (10x12 is the classic size), but rules vary, so check before you order. Our 10x12 greenhouse guide and 8x10 guide compare those sizes.
Cover material
Twin-wall polycarbonate insulates and diffuses light. Clear panels are brighter but colder. Film is cheap but temporary. Our polycarbonate greenhouse guide explains panel thickness and R-values.
Frame and storm ratings
A big walk-in catches a lot of wind. Favor kits with a published wind and snow rating and an included anchoring kit. For film structures, the University of Connecticut's high-tunnel guidance is a useful reality check: an 80 mph wind pushes about 16 lb/sq ft on the sidewalls, and 3 inches of wet snow adds about 5 lb/sq ft to the roof.
Ventilation
A large greenhouse gets hot fast. Look for two or more roof vents on anything 8x12 or bigger, and add automatic openers or an exhaust fan. See our greenhouse ventilation guide.
Base and assembly time
Hard-sided walk-ins need a level, square base before the kit arrives. Our greenhouse foundation guide walks through timber, paver and concrete options. Budget a full weekend for two people on an 8x12, and longer for large kits. Film walk-ins go up in an hour or two, but need every stake and guy rope used.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating a film walk-in as permanent. Plan on replacing the cover; Eagle Peak warrants replacement covers for just 6 months.
- Leaving guy ropes in the box. Outsunny's manuals say to use every stake and guy rope and bury the cover skirt; VEVOR says to weight the bottom edge. Owner reports of pop-ups collapsing in gusts are common enough to take that seriously.
- Ignoring door height. A 5'4" door gets old fast if you're in and out daily.
- Overloading wire shelves. Budget walk-in shelves are rated around 22-33 lb each.
- Forgetting the extras. Shelving, heaters and vent openers add hundreds of dollars. Our greenhouse shelving guide and greenhouse cost breakdown help you budget.
Alternatives to a walk-in greenhouse
Short on space? A lean-to greenhouse borrows a house wall for support and warmth. Just need somewhere to start seeds? A mini shelf greenhouse or cold frame costs a fraction of a walk-in. If you want a greenhouse that doubles as a garden building, look at wooden and cedar greenhouse kits.
Frequently asked questions
What is a walk-in greenhouse?
Any greenhouse tall enough to step inside and stand up in, as opposed to shelf-style mini greenhouses and cold frames. That ranges from $50 steel-and-film shelters to permanent aluminum and polycarbonate buildings.
How long does a walk-in greenhouse with a plastic cover last?
Budget film walk-ins carry short warranties (Eagle Peak: 1 year on frame and top, 6 months on replacement covers), and owners often report covers tearing within a season or two. Greenhouse-grade 6 mil film on a hoop house is rated for about 4 years.
What size walk-in greenhouse should I get?
6x8 is the smallest size that works as a real walk-in. 8x12 and 10x12 give you benches on both sides plus a comfortable aisle, and 12x12 or larger leaves room for a potting bench or seating. Many towns allow accessory structures up to about 120 sq ft without a permit, but check yours.
Are cheap walk-in greenhouses worth it?
As seasonal shelters for seedlings and overwintering pots, yes. As permanent greenhouses, no: the PE or PVC covers tear, the frames are light, and makers like VEVOR tell you to set them up somewhere sheltered.
What makes a greenhouse kit heavy duty?
Look for a published wind and snow rating, thick extruded aluminum or galvanized steel, twin-wall panels screwed or locked in place rather than clipped, and a proper anchored base. Riverstone's MONT (65 mph / 24 lb/sq ft) is a good benchmark.
Do I need a foundation for a walk-in greenhouse?
Hard-sided kits need a level, anchored base: timber, pavers on gravel or a concrete footing. Film walk-ins are staked and guyed, but they still need the skirt weighted or buried to stay put in wind.
