Size a greenhouse fan at 12 CFM per sq ft of floor for summer (NGMA): about 580 CFM for a 6x8, 960 for an 8x10, 1,150 for an 8x12. Our pick is the AC Infinity AIRLIFT T12 (830 CFM, temperature and humidity programming, WiFi) for houses up to about 70 sq ft; size up to the T14-T20 or choose the iPower 14 in (1,000 CFM) for an 8x10. For roof vents, the Univent is the best universal automatic greenhouse vent opener (lifts up to 15 lb); Palram-Canopia owners should get the matching HG1005. For greenhouse shade cloth, 30% suits most vegetables and 50% suits greens and hot climates; Bootstrap Farmer's 50% black is the long-life choice and an Aluminet panel is the easiest fit on a small kit.

A sealed greenhouse in sun can overheat fast, and heat kills more seedlings than cold does in most US summers. Ventilation has three layers: vents (free, but need opening), fans (force the air change), and shade cloth (stops heat getting in). We picked products for each from manufacturer specs, retailer listings and owner reviews, and sized them with extension and NGMA rules. We haven't installed these ourselves; here's how we research.
The best greenhouse fans, vent openers and shade cloth
AC Infinity AIRLIFT T12 Shutter Fan
The AIRLIFT T12 is a 12 in shutter exhaust fan with its own controller that switches on by temperature and humidity, and you can check and change it from the app over WiFi. AC Infinity lists 830 CFM, 73 Pa static pressure, an IP-44 rating and an EC motor that runs from 32 to 140°F. At 12 CFM per sq ft, 830 CFM covers about 70 sq ft, so a 6x8 or 6x10. The same line runs to the T14, T16 and T20 for bigger houses.
Why it stands out
- Built-in temperature and humidity triggers, no separate thermostat needed
- Steel shutters close when off, so less winter heat loss
- EC motor with variable speed; 4.6 stars from 776 Amazon ratings
Watch out for
- 830 CFM is free-air; real flow through screens and louvers is lower
- 62 dBA, audible next to a patio

iPower 14" Shutter Fan
The iPower 14 in shutter fan lists 1,000 CFM with a temperature controller and cord kit in the box, so it is plug-and-play. At 12 CFM per sq ft, that suits about 80 to 85 sq ft of floor: an 8x10 fully, or an 8x12 with roof vents helping. Pair it with an intake louver at the opposite end; iPower sells a 16 in gravity louver.
Why it stands out
- About 1,000 CFM for a mid-range price
- Thermostat controller included
- Aluminum blades and housing
Watch out for
- No static-pressure figure in the listing
- Needs a separate intake louver

iLiving 12" Shutter Fan
The iLiving 12 in is the cheapest thermostat-controlled shutter fan we'd consider: 960 CFM listed, an automatic shutter, a thermostat and a variable-speed control. Ignore the listing's "1,400 sq ft coverage", which is a room-ventilation figure; for a greenhouse, 960 CFM covers about 80 sq ft. A 16 in model (1,200 CFM) is available for 8x12 houses.
Why it stands out
- Lowest price for a thermostat shutter fan
- Automatic shutter and variable speed
- Sizes from 10 to 16 in
Watch out for
- Listing CFM with no static pressure stated
- Coverage claim in the title is misleading for greenhouses

Univent Automatic Vent Opener
The Univent opens a vent with no wires: a heat-sensitive cylinder pushes the arm open as the house warms, and it closes as it cools. Johnny's Selected Seeds lists a 15 lb lift, an 18 in maximum extension, and a start-opening point you can set between 60 and 77°F. Aluminum and stainless construction suits a humid house. Weigh your vent first; UAF says wax openers suit vents under about 10 to 15 lb.
Why it stands out
- Highest lift (15 lb) of the openers we found
- Adjustable opening temperature
- Fits many hinged vents and cold frame lids; 4.5 stars from 771 Amazon ratings

Palram HG1005 Auto Vent Opener
Palram-Canopia's HG1005 is a wax piston with spring return, made to fit the roof vents on its own kits with Smart-Lock connectors. Retailers list it for the Nature Series (Mythos, Hybrid, Essence), Snap & Grow, Glory, Americana and Chalet. It opens at around 68°F. The Mythos 6x8 ships with a manual roof vent only, so this is the first accessory most owners add.
Why it stands out
- Designed to fit Palram-Canopia roof vents
- No power; aluminum body
- Lightweight (1.5 lb)
Watch out for
- No lift rating is published
- Not universal; opening temperature is not adjustable per the listing

Aluminet 50% Shade Cloth
A pre-cut, taped and grommeted panel is the easiest shade cloth for a kit greenhouse: tie it over the roof at the grommets (on about 2 ft centers) instead of cutting and clipping cloth from a roll. Aluminet is a knitted, metalized cloth that gives 50% shade and reflects heat rather than absorbing it. Panels run from 7x8 ft, which drapes a 6x8 roof, to 14x16 ft. A 70% version is also sold.
Why it stands out
- Ready-made edges and brass grommets
- Reflective, so it runs cooler than black cloth
- Sizes that match common kits
Watch out for
- Panels may include a sewn seam
- Many Amazon listings use "Aluminet" generically; check the brand

How big a greenhouse fan do you need? (CFM sizing)
The National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association (NGMA) sets the summer design rate for hobby greenhouses at at least 12 CFM per sq ft of floor area, and UAF Extension uses the same rule. In winter, when you only need to clear humidity and stop the house overheating on sunny days, NGMA says 1.5 to 2 CFM per sq ft keeps the house within 15 to 20°F of outside under average conditions.
| Greenhouse | Floor | Summer fan (12 CFM/sq ft) | Winter fan (1.5-2 CFM/sq ft) | Roof vent area (15-20% of floor) | Intake opening (1.5 sq ft per 1,000 CFM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6x8 | 48 sq ft | 576 CFM | 72-96 CFM | 7.2-9.6 sq ft | 0.9 sq ft |
| 8x8 | 64 sq ft | 768 CFM | 96-128 CFM | 9.6-12.8 sq ft | 1.2 sq ft |
| 8x10 | 80 sq ft | 960 CFM | 120-160 CFM | 12-16 sq ft | 1.4 sq ft |
| 8x12 | 96 sq ft | 1,152 CFM | 144-192 CFM | 14.4-19.2 sq ft | 1.7 sq ft |
| 10x12 | 120 sq ft | 1,440 CFM | 180-240 CFM | 18-24 sq ft | 2.2 sq ft |
(Our calc from the NGMA and UAF rules.) Three adjustments matter:
- Use the right CFM. UAF says to use fan ratings at 0.125 in static pressure, or 0.25 in or more with insect screen, not the free-air figure on the box. Budget listings rarely give it, so buy about 20 to 30% over the table if you screen the intake (our rule of thumb, not a published one).
- Give it an inlet. Intake vents should be at least 1.25 times the fan's area, or 1.5 sq ft per 1,000 CFM (Bartok, cited by UAF). A fan with no inlet just strains.
- Lean-tos. On a south, east or west wall, NGMA adds half the wall area to the floor area before sizing, because the wall soaks up and radiates heat. See our lean-to greenhouse kits.
Exhaust fans vs circulation fans
Exhaust fans replace hot air with outside air. Mount them high on the end wall away from the prevailing wind, with the intake low on the opposite end, so air sweeps the whole length. Shutter fans close when off, which helps in winter. A controller turns them on at a set temperature; the fan picks above include one, or you can use the cooling outlet of a dual-stage controller like those in our greenhouse heater guide.
Circulation (HAF) fans stir the air inside to even out hot and cold spots, dry leaves and reduce disease. UConn IPM sizes them at 2 CFM per sq ft of floor, so a small clip-on fan of 100 to 250 CFM is plenty for a hobby house. UAF says HAF fans aren't needed while exhaust fans are running. Some greenhouse heaters, like the Bio Green Palma, have a fan-only mode that does this job.
In dry climates, NGMA says hobby houses up to about 300 sq ft can use a package evaporative cooler sized at 15 CFM per sq ft, with an exhaust opening such as a shutter or ridge vent. In humid regions evaporative cooling works poorly.
Automatic greenhouse vent openers: what fits
A non-electric opener is the cheapest automation you can add: it lets the house breathe on a sunny morning when nobody is home. Pick by three things:
- Vent weight. Weigh the vent sash (a luggage scale works). Univent: up to 15 lb. Bayliss XL: up to 12 lb. Palram HG1005: no published rating, but it is designed for Palram's own light polycarbonate roof vents. UAF's guide puts all wax openers at under about 10 to 15 lb.
- Your frame. On a Palram-Canopia kit (Mythos, Hybrid, Essence, Snap & Grow, Glory, Americana, Chalet), the HG1005 is the direct fit. Some kits already include openers: the Glory and Prestige ship with automatic roof openers per Canopia. Read more in our Palram greenhouse review. On aluminum glass houses, the clamp-on Bayliss is common. For wood frames and cold frames, the Univent is most adaptable.
- Opening temperature. The Univent adjusts between 60 and 77°F; the HG1005 opens at about 68°F.
Wax openers can be torn off by strong wind when the vent is open. In storm-prone areas, add a stop chain or close and latch vents before a storm; a properly anchored greenhouse matters more still.
Greenhouse shade cloth: what percentage?
Shade cloth is rated by how much light it blocks. More shade means cooler, but less growth for light-hungry crops. Extension guidance:
| Crop or use | Shade | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Most vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) | 20-40%, usually 30% | University of Delaware Extension |
| Cool-season greens kept through summer (lettuce, spinach) | 30-50% | Kansas State Research and Extension |
| Hot, high-sun regions, or a mixed house of seedlings and greens | 50% | Our suggestion: matches the common 50% stock size |
| Shade plants, ferns, orchids | 50-70% | Higher grades exist for these; check your plant's needs |
Color: black cloth is the most common and cheapest. University of Delaware notes white or aluminized cloth may offer additional cooling, because it reflects heat rather than absorbing it. Bootstrap Farmer and Be Cool both say their aluminized cloth also helps hold heat in winter. Fit the cloth over the outside of the roof where you can, so heat is stopped before it passes the glazing, and take it off in fall when you need every bit of light. Note that 30% shade does not mean a 30% lower temperature.
A ventilation plan for your greenhouse size
- 6x6 to 6x8 (36-48 sq ft). Auto opener on the roof vent, the door open on hot days, and shade cloth from late spring. In hot summers, add a 12 in thermostat fan (the T12 or iLiving) high on the back wall with a louver or opened vent opposite. See our 6x8 greenhouse guide.
- 8x8 to 8x10 (64-80 sq ft). Auto openers on every roof vent, plus a 14 in fan of about 1,000 CFM (iPower 14, or the T14) with a matching intake louver. A clip-on circulation fan helps in winter. Plan more in our 8x10 greenhouse guide.
- 8x12 to 10x12 (96-120 sq ft). Plan on 1,150 to 1,450 CFM: one 16 in fan or two 12 in fans, two or more auto vent openers, an intake of about 2 sq ft, and 30 to 50% shade cloth. In winter, run the fan at low speed on a humidity trigger. See the 10x12 greenhouse guide.
How to choose greenhouse ventilation
- Start with shade and vents, then add fans to cover the gap. Shade cloth cuts the heat load; a fan then has less to remove.
- Power. Fans need a GFCI-protected outlet. Without power, rely on auto openers, a door and shade cloth.
- Controls. A fan with a thermostat or humidity trigger works when you're not there; a manual fan doesn't.
- Screens. Insect screens cut airflow, so size the fan up.
- Winter. Shutters that close stop drafts; see our winter greenhouse guide for keeping humidity down without losing heat.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying by "coverage" claims. Room-ventilation coverage figures are irrelevant; use 12 CFM per sq ft.
- No intake. An exhaust fan with no opening opposite it moves little air and strains the motor.
- Overloading an opener. A vent heavier than the opener's rating won't open fully and wears the piston.
- Too much shade. 70% cloth over tomatoes cuts yield; stay around 30% for fruiting crops.
- Leaving shade on all year. Light, not heat, limits winter growth. Take it off in fall.
Frequently asked questions
What size fan do I need for my greenhouse?
For summer cooling, the National Greenhouse Manufacturers Association says hobby houses need at least 12 CFM per sq ft of floor. An 8x12 (96 sq ft) needs about 1,150 CFM; a 6x8 about 580 CFM. Use the fan's rating at 0.125 in static pressure, not its free-air figure.
How do automatic greenhouse vent openers work?
A cylinder filled with wax or a similar compound expands as it warms and pushes a piston that lifts the vent; a spring closes it as it cools. They need no power, but only suit light vents: UAF says under about 10 to 15 lb. The Univent lifts up to 15 lb and the Bayliss XL up to 12 lb.
What percentage shade cloth is best for a greenhouse?
For vegetables, University of Delaware Extension says 20 to 40%, with about 30% the most common choice. Cool-season greens grown through summer can take 30 to 50% (Kansas State Research and Extension). Higher figures suit shade plants, not fruiting crops.
Should a greenhouse fan blow in or out?
Exhaust fans pull hot air out high on one end while cooler air enters through a louver or vent low on the opposite end. Circulation fans just stir the air inside to even out temperature and dry leaves; they do not cool the house.
Does a small greenhouse need a fan?
A 6x8 with a roof vent and an open door can manage in mild climates, but in hot summers roof vents alone rarely reach the 15 to 20% of floor area UAF recommends. A thermostat exhaust fan and shade cloth are the usual fix.
Black or white shade cloth for a greenhouse?
Black is the most common and cheapest. Aluminized (reflective) cloth bounces heat away and, per its makers, can hold some heat in winter. University of Delaware notes white or aluminized cloth may offer additional cooling.
