The cheapest greenhouse worth buying depends on the job. For a permanent hard-panel greenhouse, the Outsunny BloomGreen 6x8 ($450) and the Palram Hybrid 6x8 on sale ($505) are the floor. If you can stretch a little further, the Palram Mythos 6x8 is the best value long-term. For the most growing space per dollar, the Bootstrap Farmer 10x12 hoop house gives you 120 sq ft for $650 plus lumber. For seed starting only, an Eagle Peak pop-up ($125) or a 4-tier shelf greenhouse ($46) is enough.

"Cheap" only counts if the greenhouse is still standing next spring. The pattern in owner reports is consistent: the lowest price buys you a season, and a few hundred dollars more buys you years. We sorted the options by what they cost per square foot and per year, using retailer prices checked in October 2026, published specs and owner reports. We haven't built these kits ourselves.
What a cheap greenhouse really costs
Sticker price misleads. A walk-in under $100 with a cover that tears in a year can cost more per season than a kit ten times the price that lasts a decade. Here is the same comparison per square foot, using the October 2026 prices in our product data:
| Option | Typical price | Floor area | Cost per sq ft | Realistic life |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KOKSRY walk-in (PE film, shelves) | $70 | about 21 sq ft | about $3 | Cover 1-2 seasons |
| Eagle Peak 6x4 pop-up | $125 | 24 sq ft | about $5 | Frame warranted 1 yr; replacement covers sold separately |
| Harbor Freight 6x8 | $200 | 48 sq ft | about $4 | Years, if you reinforce it |
| Bootstrap Farmer 10x12 hoop house | $650 + lumber and door | 120 sq ft | about $5-7 | Film rated 4 years; steel frame much longer |
| Outsunny BloomGreen 6x8 | $450 | 48 sq ft | about $9 | Years, sheltered site |
| Palram Mythos 6x8 | $689–$889 | 48 sq ft | about $14-19 | 5-year warranty; twin-wall panels |
"Realistic life" is our reading of warranties and owner reports, not a manufacturer figure. The University of Arkansas greenhouse course puts UV-treated polyethylene film at three to five years and untreated film at two to three. The thin PVC and PE covers on budget pop-ups are typically far shorter-lived. For the full picture, including bases and running costs, see how much a greenhouse costs.
The best cheap greenhouse kits
Palram Mythos 6x8
It isn't the cheapest, but it's the cheapest kit we'd expect to still be growing tomatoes in five years. You get 4 mm twin-wall polycarbonate on every side, an aluminum frame on a galvanized steel base, a 5-year warranty, and published ratings of 56 mph wind and 15.4 psf snow. Expect $689–$889 for the 6x8 depending on retailer and sales, and Eartheasy sells the whole family down to a 6x4.
Why it stands out
- Twin-wall panels insulate far better than any budget kit
- Published wind and snow ratings, which most budget kits lack
- 4.3/5 from 704 Wayfair reviewers
Watch out for
- Needs a level, anchored base (a warranty condition), which adds cost
- One owner's 6x8 was wrecked by about 30 mph gusts until locknuts and angle bracing were added

Palram Hybrid 6x8
The Hybrid shares the Mythos frame and base but swaps the twin-wall walls for clear polycarbonate. At its October 2026 Wayfair sale price ($505, down from a list price close to the Mythos), it was the cheapest way into a Palram-Canopia greenhouse. It's brighter than the Mythos and great for spring starts, though it holds less heat overnight.

- Name-brand kit with a 5-year warranty at a budget price
- 4.1/5 from 1,061 Wayfair reviews
- Twin-wall roof diffuses harsh midday sun
Watch out for

How to choose a cheap greenhouse that lasts
Rigid panels beat film if you want years, not seasons
Film covers on budget pop-ups are the part that fails. Eagle Peak warrants its replacement covers for six months, and Amazon owner summaries for VEVOR, Quictent and Zenport mention covers that tear or last "only one year". Even single-layer polycarbonate outlasts that by years. If your budget is under $200, buy film and treat the cover as a consumable.
Check for a base and anchors
A cheap kit without a steel base or real ground anchors is the one that ends up in the neighbor's yard. The Mythos, Hybrid and BloomGreen include galvanized steel bases; pop-ups rely on stakes and guy ropes. Use every stake and rope supplied, and bury the cover skirt if there is one.
Published ratings are a quality signal
Palram publishes 56 mph wind and about 15 psf snow for its 6-ft lines. Most budget brands publish nothing, or claim numbers they haven't tested. If a kit has no rating, assume it needs a sheltered spot.
Twin-wall or clear?
Twin-wall polycarbonate holds heat about twice as well as single-layer panels (per Palram-Canopia) and diffuses light. Clear panels are brighter and cheaper. If you'll grow past October, the extra cost of twin-wall comes back in heating.
How to make a cheap greenhouse last longer
- Build a level base. Pavers on compacted gravel or a pressure-treated timber frame. Our greenhouse foundation guide shows how.
- Anchor every corner. Ground anchors or screws into the timber base, not just the pegs in the box.
- Swap friction bolts for locknuts. This is the fix one Mythos owner credits with keeping his greenhouse standing after the first storm.
- Add diagonal bracing. Aluminum angle across the corners stiffens light frames.
- Screw panels in. On slide-in or clip-in panels, a few screws with neoprene washers stop them popping in gusts.
- Vent on hot days. An automatic vent opener costs far less than a lost crop. See greenhouse ventilation.
- Take film greenhouses down before storms. They're quick to put back up.
Clearance and sale timing
Greenhouse prices swing hard with promotions. In the first week of October 2026 we logged Costco's $200 off the Yardistry 8x7 (through Oct 25), and Wayfair sale prices on the Palram Mythos 6x8 and Hybrid 6x8 that sat roughly a third to nearly half below list. Late summer and fall are when retailers clear outdoor stock, so if you can wait, check then. Costco shoppers should read our Costco greenhouse review first.
Cheap DIY greenhouse options
Building from scratch is cheapest for film-covered hoop houses: conduit or fence top rail, greenhouse film and lumber. For hard-panel greenhouses, buying polycarbonate sheets and framing usually costs about as much as a kit before you count your time. Our DIY greenhouse guide compares the two, and DIY greenhouse kits covers kits a first-timer can realistically build. For season extension over a bed, a cold frame or low tunnel costs less still.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest greenhouse that actually lasts?
For a rigid greenhouse, a 6x8 aluminum and polycarbonate kit such as the Outsunny BloomGreen or the Palram Hybrid on sale is the floor, both under about $500. For the most space per dollar, a 10x12 hoop house kit from Bootstrap Farmer costs about the same as a name-brand 6x8, plus lumber and a door, with 6 mil film rated for 4 years.
Are cheap plastic greenhouses worth it?
For seed starting and spring frost protection, yes. Pop-up and shelf greenhouses under $150 do that job well. They are not permanent: Eagle Peak warrants replacement covers for only six months, and Amazon owner summaries for several brands mention covers that rip within a year.
Is it cheaper to build or buy a greenhouse?
A DIY hoop house built from conduit or top rail and greenhouse film is usually the cheapest walk-in option per square foot. A hard-panel greenhouse is rarely cheaper to build from scratch than to buy as a kit once you price polycarbonate sheets, framing and your time.
When do greenhouse kits go on sale?
Sales show up at the end of the growing season. In early October 2026, Costco had $200 off the Yardistry 8x7, and Wayfair had the Palram Mythos 6x8 and Hybrid 6x8 at roughly a third to nearly half off list. Check retailers in late summer and fall.
Is the Harbor Freight greenhouse a good cheap option?
Only if you're prepared to modify it. They are the cheapest hard-panel kits we found, but the 10x12 is rated 2.5/5 and builders on forums say screwing the panels to the frame and adding bracing is essential in wind.
