Very few true greenhouse shed combo kits exist. The best one we found is the Yardistry Obsidian. It's 8.1 x 11.4 ft overall, split into a 7 x 5.3 ft double-wall polycarbonate greenhouse and a 7 x 3.8 ft lockable storage room, for $2,000. If you'd rather have a shed-built greenhouse with solid walls, a polycarbonate roof and real windows, look at the Alpine EZ-Fit. Already own a shed? Then pairing it with a lean-to greenhouse on its south wall is usually cheaper and grows better than converting it.

Search "greenhouse shed" and you'll get Pinterest boards and Reddit builds, but almost no kits you can actually buy. That's because the category is small. This guide lists what really exists, what to check before buying a marketplace combo, and the three DIY routes that work. Our picks are based on manufacturer specs and listings. We haven't built these structures ourselves.
Three ways to get a greenhouse shed
| Route | What it is | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combo kit | One building: a glazed greenhouse half and a solid storage half | Small yards that only have room for one structure | Few choices; the greenhouse half is small |
| Shed-style greenhouse | Solid lower walls and a glazed roof and windows; potting bench inside | A potting shed that also grows seedlings and herbs | Less light than an all-glazed greenhouse |
| Pair or convert | Attach a lean-to greenhouse to an existing shed, place a greenhouse beside it, or re-roof a shed with polycarbonate | Anyone who already owns a sound shed | Conversions need a solid roof structure and moisture control |
The best greenhouse shed combos and alternatives
Yardistry Obsidian Greenhouse + Shed
This is a real combo, not a greenhouse with a shelf. A greenhouse room (7 x 5.3 ft inside) with double-wall polycarbonate and an automatic roof vent shares a roofline with a 7 x 3.8 ft storage room under a black aluminum roof. Both have doors with key locks and closers. It's built from FSC-certified lumber with tongue-and-groove lower walls, and there are dual upper and lower shelves, one of which folds down. Yardistry warrants it for 1 year, plus 5 years against rot and decay.
Why it stands out
- Lockable tool storage and a vented greenhouse in one footprint
- Double-wall polycarbonate and an auto roof vent
- Front and rear doors with closers
Watch out for
- The greenhouse half is only about 37 sq ft
- No published snow or wind rating
- Professional anchoring is an add-on service

Alpine EZ-Fit Garden Greenhouse
The EZ-Fit is built like a shed: panelized walls in LP SmartSide siding, a 30 in Dutch door with transom windows and two air vents. But it has an 8 mm corrugated polycarbonate skylight roof and 18 x 47 in windows, so it works as a potting shed and seed-starting house that you can also store tools in. It's made in the USA, in sizes from 8x8 to 10x16, and sold through Eartheasy.
Why it stands out
- Feels like a shed, grows like a sunroom
- Sizes from 8x8 to 10x16
- 5-year manufacturer warranty; the siding carries its own 50-year limited warranty
Watch out for
- Arrives primed only, so painting is on you
- No floor kit; plan your base
- Solid walls mean less light than a fully glazed greenhouse

Yardistry 8x7
If you already have a shed, the cheapest way to a matching pair is a small wooden greenhouse beside it. This 8x7 Yardistry (the one Costco sells) uses the same FSC wood and double-wall polycarbonate as the Obsidian. It also has a heat-sensitive automatic roof vent and 32 in wood base walls. Costco owners rate it highly, and their main complaint is that it takes about two days to build, not the 10-12 hours claimed. Costco has no affiliate program; we list it because it's a good fit.
Why it stands out
- Wood looks that sit well beside a shed
- Automatic roof vent
- Strong owner feedback
Watch out for
- Sold at Costco (seasonal, delivery only)
- Needs a yearly water-based sealant

Morinome Cedar Greenhouse-Shed Combo
Wayfair and other marketplaces list cedar "greenhouse and tool shed combos" like this one at a lower price than the Yardistry. It looks the part: rot-resistant cedar, UV-filtering polycarbonate panels and built-in shelving. But its own listing shows a wind rating of only 13 mph, it comes from a little-known brand, and we saw no reviews. If you buy a marketplace combo, find the published wind rating first and plan to anchor it well beyond the instructions.
Why it stands out
- Cheaper than the Yardistry Obsidian
- Cedar frame
Watch out for
- Listed wind rating is just 13 mph
- Unknown brand, no reviews seen; depth not listed
Full specs
- Sizes
- 14 W x 7.9 H (depth not captured)

If growing space is the priority and the shed can stay a shed, a 10x12 hoop house next to it gives you 120 sq ft for less than any combo kit. Details are in our hoop house kit guide.
Why it stands out
- 120 sq ft of in-ground growing space
- Ships in boxes, no freight
Watch out for
- Film needs replacing about every 4 years

How to choose a greenhouse shed
Decide the split
Write down what goes in the storage half: mower, bags of soil, tools, a potting bench. In the Obsidian, storage is about 27 sq ft and the greenhouse about 37 sq ft. If your storage needs are bigger, a separate shed and greenhouse will serve you better than one compromised building.
Orientation
Point the glazed side south (in the US) and put the solid storage side to the north. That way, the storage wall blocks cold winds instead of shading your plants. On a combo with glazing at one end, the greenhouse end should face south or southeast.
Glazing and light
Double-wall polycarbonate (Yardistry) insulates better than single-pane panels, but it diffuses the view. Shed-style buildings with glazing only in the roof and windows get much less light than a fully glazed greenhouse. That's fine for seed starting, potting and overwintering, but weaker for summer fruiting crops. For fully glazed wooden options, see our wooden and cedar greenhouse kits.
Moisture
Greenhouses are humid, and sheds don't like humidity. Tools rust, cardboard sags and untreated wood grows mold. Look for a solid partition between the two halves and vent the greenhouse side well. Keep fertilizer and powered tools in sealed bins.
Wind, snow and anchoring
Neither the Obsidian nor the EZ-Fit publishes snow or wind ratings. The marketplace combo we found lists 13 mph. Anchor any combo to a level, solid base: a timber frame on gravel, pavers or a slab. Our greenhouse foundation guide walks through each option.
Permits and HOAs
The model residential code exempts one-story detached accessory buildings up to 200 sq ft from a building permit. Many towns use a smaller threshold, though, and setbacks, height limits and HOA design rules still apply. Running power or water to the shed usually needs a permit of its own.
DIY: convert or pair your existing shed
Option 1: Add a lean-to greenhouse to the shed's south wall
This is the easiest and most effective route. A lean-to greenhouse uses the shed wall as its back, and the wall soaks up sun and releases heat at night. You get a growing room and a storage room side by side, which is the same layout as a combo kit. Palram-Canopia's Lean-to Grow 8x4 (rated 15 psf snow and 47 mph wind) is a common choice. Our lean-to greenhouse kit roundup compares the options and how to fix them to a wall.
Option 2: Re-roof part of the shed with polycarbonate
- Check the structure The roof framing must carry snow loads without the sheathing that currently stiffens it. If in doubt, ask a builder.
- Use the south slope Replace sheathing and shingles on the south-facing slope with twin-wall polycarbonate, sealed at the top edge and fixed with the panel maker's closures and screws.
- Add windows and vents Put windows on the south wall for side light, and add a vent high on the opposite end so hot air can escape.
- Protect the wood Seal the interior surfaces and add a gravel or paver floor that drains.
Expect a bright potting shed, not a full greenhouse. Crops on benches under the clear roof will do well, while the shaded corners stay storage.
Option 3: Build a combo from scratch
A timber-frame building with a solid north half and a glazed south half is a classic DIY project. Our DIY greenhouse guide covers framing, glazing choices and the point where buying a kit becomes cheaper.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying on looks alone A 13 mph wind rating on a marketplace combo is a warning. Look for published ratings.
- Facing the glass north The storage side belongs on the north. The growing side needs south light.
- Mixing humidity and tools Without a partition and ventilation, the shed half rusts and molds.
- Converting a weak shed roof Clear panels don't stiffen a roof the way sheathing does.
- Skipping the base A combo on uneven ground racks its doors out of line within a season.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a greenhouse and shed combo kit?
Yes, but few. The best documented is the Yardistry 8.1 x 11.4 Obsidian, which splits into a 7 x 5.3 ft polycarbonate greenhouse and a 7 x 3.8 ft lockable storage room. Marketplace sellers list cedar combos too, but check their wind ratings: one Wayfair listing shows only 13 mph.
Can I turn a shed into a greenhouse?
Partly. Swapping some roof sheathing for twin-wall polycarbonate and adding windows on the south side gives a bright potting shed, but most sheds have too little glazing for sun-loving crops and the wood will need protecting from constant humidity. Attaching a lean-to greenhouse to the shed's south wall often works better.
What is a potting shed greenhouse?
A building with a solid-walled work and storage area plus a glazed growing area, so you can pot up, store tools and soil, and grow under one roof. Combo kits, shed-style greenhouses and a lean-to on a shed wall all fit the description.
Do I need a permit for a greenhouse shed?
Often not for small ones. The model residential code exempts one-story detached accessory structures up to 200 sq ft, but many towns use a lower limit, and setbacks or HOA rules can still apply. Adding electricity or water usually triggers a permit.
How much does a greenhouse shed cost?
Real combo kits start around the price of a mid-range wooden greenhouse and go up from there; the Yardistry Obsidian and shed-style greenhouses from Alpine Structures run from about two thousand to nine thousand dollars, plus a base. Pairing a cheap greenhouse with an existing shed is the budget route.
