True 8x10 greenhouse kits are surprisingly rare, because most aluminum kits jump from 8x8 to 8x12. The best real 8x10 is the Janco Palmetto 8x10, a US-made aluminum greenhouse rated by Janco to exceed 120 mph wind and 50 lb/sq ft snow. The best-value 8x10 is the cedar Yardistry 8x10 from Costco (4.6/5 on 615 reviews). If 8x12 fits your yard, the Riverstone MONT 8x12 is the strongest polycarbonate kit we found. An 8x10 gives you 80 sq ft: two 2 ft benches with a 4 ft path, or about 10 tomato plants in beds.

An 8x10 greenhouse is where a backyard greenhouse stops feeling cramped. You get a real path, room for a potting bench and enough floor for beds and benches at the same time. The catch is that very few kits come in exactly 8x10, so this page covers the true 8x10 options first and then the 8x12 kits most buyers end up comparing.
Picks are research-based: published specs, retailer listings and owner reviews. We have not built these kits ourselves. How we research.
What fits inside an 8x10 greenhouse?
At 8 ft wide you can run a 2 ft deep bench along each long wall and still keep a 4 ft path. That's enough to turn around with a flat in your hands, open a folding stool, or wheel a barrow in through double doors. A 24 in bench is about as deep as you can comfortably reach across. If you only bench one side you could go 30 in deep, but the back row gets awkward.
Seed flats
Leave 2.5 ft clear by the door and each bench has about 7.5 ft (90 in) of usable length. A standard "10x20" nursery flat (about 11 in wide in reality) set crosswise uses about 11 in of bench, so you fit about 8 flats per side, 16 in total on one level. Add a lower shelf and you double the storage, though lower shelves get much less light.
Tomatoes and in-ground beds
Replace one or both benches with beds along the 10-ft walls. At about 2 ft of row per plant you get roughly 5 indeterminate tomatoes per side, about 10 plants in total. A common layout is a bed down one side for tomatoes or cucumbers and a bench down the other for trays and pots. That mixed setup is the main reason people move up from a 6x8 greenhouse.
What about 8x12?
An 8x12 gives 96 sq ft, which adds 2 ft to each bench run: about 10 flats per side, or 6 tomatoes per side. For most kit lines the 8x12 is the "standard" size, so there are many more models to choose from.

Exaco RIGA IIIS
The Exaco RIGA IIIS measures 7.7 x 10.5 ft, the closest thing to an 8x10 in the premium aluminum class. Its steep arched roof is designed to shed snow, the walls are 8 mm twin-wall with 10 mm ends, and the oversized 40 x 24 in roof window plus a back-wall window move a lot of air. Exaco gives a 10-year limited warranty. Exaco doesn't publish a snow load figure in our data, and the base frame is sold separately. It is also sold at Costco as the "Riga Professional" (28 reviews).
Why it stands out
- Arched roof sheds snow; twin-wall all round
- Big roof window plus a back window
- 10-year limited warranty
Watch out for

Riverstone MONT 8x12
If you can fit an 8x12, the Riverstone MONT is the strongest polycarbonate kit in our research: heavy extruded US aluminum, 8 mm twin-wall panels, automatic roof vents and published ratings of 65 mph wind and 24 lb/sq ft snow, with a 10-year warranty. Extensions come in 4-ft sections up to 8x24, and Eartheasy sells a Mojave package for hot climates and a heated Growers package. A dealer comparison flags the low 4'10" sidewalls and installs that can take several days.
Why it stands out
- Best published wind and snow ratings of the 8-ft polycarbonate kits
- Extendable later in 4-ft sections
- 10-year warranty (15 on the Growers package)
Watch out for
- Low 4'10" sidewalls limit tall plants at the edges

Palram Glory 8x12
Glory is Palram's premium line and the one we'd pick for a heated, four-season greenhouse. It has the thickest panels Palram makes (10 mm twin-wall), a reinforced powder-coated frame, an automatic roof vent opener and a side louver. Wayfair lists 50 mph wind and 20 lb/sq ft snow, so it's a better snow performer than the cheaper Palram lines but has a lower wind figure. Owners rate it 4.2/5 on 35 Wayfair reviews.
Why it stands out
- 10 mm twin-wall panels for heat retention
- Automatic roof vent included
- Also made in 8x8, 8x16 and 8x20

Palram Balance 8x12
The Balance is Costco's main 8-ft Palram series: an aluminum frame on a galvanized base, a 4 mm twin-wall roof over clear walls, and lockable double doors with a 45 in wide opening and low threshold. Palram rates it for 56 mph and 15 lb/sq ft. Costco owners give the series only 3.4/5 on 550 reviews, the lowest score among Costco's greenhouses, so plan to anchor it well and seal the panels.
Why it stands out
- Wide double doors for a wheelbarrow
- Twin-wall roof, clear walls
- Published 56 mph / 15 lb/sq ft ratings
Watch out for
- Weakest owner score of any Costco greenhouse

How to choose an 8x10 greenhouse
Glazing
Twin-wall polycarbonate is the default for a reason: it insulates far better than single-wall panels and diffuses light, so plants don't scorch. Thicker is warmer: 6 mm twin-wall is rated R-1.53 and 10 mm multi-wall around R-2.1 in published specs. Glass gives the clearest view and doesn't yellow but needs a solid foundation. Clear-walled "hybrid" kits are brighter but colder.
Frame: aluminum or wood
Aluminum (Janco, Riverstone, Palram, Exaco) doesn't rot and needs little care; the profile thickness decides how rigid it is. Cedar (Yardistry, Outdoor Living Today) looks better in a garden and is easy to screw shelves and hooks into, but needs sealing. Our wooden and cedar greenhouse kits page goes deeper on wood.
Snow and wind
For reference, UConn's high-tunnel engineering guidance says 3 in of wet snow or 12 in of dry snow adds about 5 lb/sq ft. A 15 lb/sq ft rating is fine for most of the South and Pacific coast if you brush off heavy falls. In the snow belt, look at 20+ lb/sq ft (Glory, MONT, Palmetto) or an arched or steep roof (RIGA).
Ventilation
An 8x10 needs more than one small vent. Look for automatic roof openers (Yardistry, Glory, MONT, Palmetto's ridge vent, OLT) and a low wall vent or louver, so cool air enters low and hot air leaves high. Add a fan for summer: see greenhouse fans and vent openers.
Doors
If you'll bring in a wheelbarrow, bags of soil or a cart, double doors matter. The Balance opening is 45 in wide and the MONT's is 4 ft. Single doors on Glory (2'7"), Yardistry and RIGA are fine for walking in with a tray.
Base and assembly
An 8x10 perimeter is 36 ft, which is the length of timber you need for a framed base (or 44 ft for an 8x12). Budget a weekend minimum for two people, and more for MONT or RIGA. Our greenhouse foundation guide covers gravel pads, timber frames and slabs.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every line comes in 8x10. Check the size list before you plan the base. Many "8x10" listings are actually 8x8 or 8x12.
- Ignoring the permit limit. An 8x12 is 96 sq ft and a 10x12 is 120 sq ft, close to common exemption thresholds. Confirm before ordering.
- Trusting a single rating. Retail ratings for the same Palram line differ a lot between the Canopia site and US retailers (Balance: 4.42 on Canopia vs 3.4 at Costco). Read the low reviews for patterns.
- Forgetting heat in winter. 80-96 sq ft takes a real heater to keep frost-free. Read our greenhouse heater guide before you choose clear walls.
Bigger or smaller?
If 80 sq ft feels like a stretch, the 6x8 greenhouse page covers the popular starter size. If you want room for a work area and a seating corner, see our 10x12 greenhouse guide with real costs including the base, or browse all walk-in greenhouse kits. For a total budget, read how much a greenhouse costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 8x10 greenhouse a good size?
Yes. At 80 sq ft it's the smallest size where you get benches on both sides and a path wide enough to turn around with a tray or a wheelbarrow. It's a common size for keen hobby gardeners who outgrew a 6x8.
Why are there so few 8x10 greenhouse kits?
Most aluminum kits grow in 4-ft modules, so an 8-ft-wide series goes 8x8, 8x12, 8x16. Palram's Balance, Glory, Bella and Snap & Grow lines and Riverstone's MONT all skip 8x10. True 8x10 options include the Janco Palmetto and the Yardistry 8x10 (8 x 9.7 ft).
Do I need a permit for an 8x10 greenhouse?
At 80 sq ft many US towns treat it as a small accessory structure, and exemption thresholds of 120 or 200 sq ft are common, but limits vary by city, county and HOA. Check setbacks and size limits with your local building department before you order.
How many tomato plants fit in an 8x10 greenhouse?
With beds along both 10-ft walls and about 2 ft of row per plant, roughly 10 indeterminate tomatoes, with a 4 ft path between the beds.
8x10 or 8x12 greenhouse?
If your yard and local rules allow it, 8x12 adds 16 sq ft for a modest price step and opens up the Palram, Riverstone and cedar 8x12 kits. Pick 8x10 when the space is fixed or when you specifically want the Yardistry or Janco.
